ROCK
DEFINITION
Any natural mass of mineral matter that makes up the earth’s crust is called a
rock
TYPES
2. SEDIMENTRY ROCK
3. METAMORPHIC ROCK
IGNEOUS ROCK
Term - Latin word Ignis meaning fire.
Formation- When the molten magma cools, it becomes solid.
They are also called primary rocks.
TYPES
SEDIMENTRY ROCK
Term: Latin word sedimentum meaning settle down
Formation-Sediments of rock are transported and deposited by wind, water, etc.
These
loose sediments are compressed and hardened to form layers of rocks.
Process of formation- Lithification
May be Mechanically Formed, Chemically Formed or Organically Formed.
May also contain
fossils of plants, animals and other microorganisms that once lived on them.
For example,
sandstone is made from grains of sand.
METAMORPHIC ROCK
Term: Greek word metamorphose meaning change of form.
Formation- Under excessive heat and pressure Igneous and sedimentary rocks can change
into metamorphic rocks
For example- clay changes into slate - limestone into marble.
